➡Soaps are the sodium salts of long chain fatty acids. Fatty acids are long chain carboxylic acids. Soaps are formed by the reaction of vegetable fats(called glycerides) with NaOH. This alkaline hydrolysis of an ester is called saponification.
vegetable oil/fat + NaOH -----> Soap + glycerol
➡Soaps are biodegradable. Soaps on reaction with hard water do not form foam easily. This is due to the formation of a curdy white precipitate called sc-um due to the presence of magnesium and calcium ions. Soaps contain both hydrophobic part(which is directed towards organic dirt) and hydrophilic part(which is directed towards water) and helps in the removal of dirt by forming aggregates called Micelles.
