During 18th and 19th century artists wanted to personify nations to create a feeling of unity among its citizens.

1) The artists used female figures to create allegory of nation.
2) The female figures were not any particular female in real life, they were used to give a concrete form to a nation.
3) During  the French revolution, the artists created female allegory Marianne who represented Liberty,Justice and Republic France. This created a sense of unity among the citizens.
4) Similarly in Germany, Germania became the allegory. She wears a crown of Oak leaves that symbolizes Heroism. She guarded Germany with her German sword.
