Sir Syed Ahmad Khan was born in 1817 in Delhi. He was an Indian educator and politician who pioneered modern education for the Muslim community in India. He wrote a booklet after the war of Independence of 1857 on the causes of the mutiny. Sir Syed strongly blamed the British and their unfair policies for the revolt. Sir Syed organised relief for the famine struck people of the Northwest Frontier Province in 1860. He established a modern school in Ghazipur in 1883 and a madrassah in Muradabad in 1858 which was the first if its kind to impart scientific education. He also founded the Muhammedan Anglo-Oriental College which later become the Aligarh Muslim University.
