Tell me about subphylum Vertebrata

The chordates that possess a backbone are called vertebrates.

Characteristics of Vertebrates :

Notochord is present in the embryo​ and in adults it is replaced by the vertical column.

Nerve cold is divided into brain and spinal cord.

Brain is enclosed in a brain box. This brainbox is known as cranium.

Body is divided into head ,thorax and abdomen.

Body has two pairs of fins or Limbs.


Subphylum Vertebrata is divided into 5 classes :

1)Pisces .

Commonly known as fishes .

These are cold blooded and aquatic vertebrates.

The body is streamlined.

They have paired appendages in the form of fins.

There are one pair of pelvic fins and one pair of pectoral fins.

They do the respiration by 5 pairs of gills.

Body is having scales.

2) Amphibia :

They are cold blooded animals.

They can live on both land and as well as in water.

Neck is absent.

Body has 2 pairs of limbs .

Skin is moist .

Heart is 3 chambered.


3) Reptilia

They are cold blooded animals.

They are having two pairs of limbs.

Skin is dry .

Respiration is it done with the help of lungs.

They are having three chambered heart but crocodile is an exception.

The eggs are large yolky and shelled.

4) Aves :

They are warm blooded animals.

Feathers are present.

Forelimbs are modified into wings.

Bones are light due to presence of air cavities.

Neck is extremely flexible.

Heart is four chambered.

5) Mammalia :

They are warm blooded animals.

The skin is covered with hairs.

They are having mammary glands for the new nourishment of young ones.

Pinna is present.

Heart is 4 chambered.

Two pairs of limbs are present.

They produce young ones but 2 are exceptions.

1. Vertebrates which is belonging a subphylum of chordate animals, comprising those having a brain.

2. They are enclosed in a skull or cranium.

3. A segmented spinal column is found.

4. A major taxonomic group that includes mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes.
