Accent trema in french is the one which looks like this ë.
Its used above ë,ï and ü only.

Usually the letter having trema in a word would definitely have a vowel before it as the main purpose of this accent is that the one with this accent has to be pronounced differently from the vowel ahead of it.

Examples- L’aïeul(ancestor),Le Noël(Christmas),Le maïs(maize) and other words have trema.
