Rules for solving algebra questions:

  • Simplify each side of the equation by removing parentheses and combining like terms.
  • Use addition or subtraction to isolate the variable term on one side of the equation.
  • Use multiplication or division to solve for the variable.

Note:

Whenever you are shifting sides like LHS to RHS and visa-versa, the sign of  the operator changes.

Example: +5 becomes -5 when shifting it from LHS to RHS and visa-versa

                ×5 becomes /5 when shifting it from LHS to RHS and visa-versa

LHS = Left Hand Side

RHS = Right Hand Side

For example:

Find the value of x in 5x-3=12

5x-3=12

    Move 3 to RHS, so it becomes +3

5x=12+3

    Add 12 and 3 = 15

5x=15

     Divide 15 by 5 (If we move 5 to RHS, ×5 becomes /5 )

x=15/5

x=3
