●Mitochondria are small granular or filamentous bodies with various shapes but is usually sausage like.

●Mitochondria are double walled with an outer membrane and an inner membrane. The outer membrane is smooth while the walls of inner membrane are thrown into folds and tubules called cristae.
● Mitochondria have their own DNA(containing several genes) and they also contain their own ribosomes.
●The chief function of Mitochondria includes:-
1. release of energy from pyruvic acid produced in cytoplasm in the form of ATP which is the seat of cellular respiration and stores energy.
2. Synthesis of respiratory enzymes.
