Micelles are formed by self-assembly of amphiphilic molecules. The structures contain hydrophilic/polar region (head) and hydrophobic/non-polar region (tail) . Micelles are formed in aqueous solution whereby the polar region faces the outside surface of the micelle and the nonpolar region forms the core.

A micelle, is the spherical structure (as seen in figure 2) that forms around the oil stains as the hydrophobic tails are able to interact with the nonpolar oil stains. As a part of laundry detergent, the surfactants can perform multiple roles to remove the stains out of clothing.

Most dirt is oily in nature and as you know,oil does not dissolve in water.The molecules of soap are sodium or potassium salts of long chain carboxylic acids .The ionic end of soap interacts with water while the carbon chain interacts with oil.The soap molecules this form radial structures called MICELLES.Soap in the form of micelle is able to clean,since the oily dirt will be collected in the centre of the micelle.
