Plastics are an important material in our economy, and modern daily life is unthinkable without them. At the same time however, they can have serious downsides on the environment and health. Action on plastics was identified as a priority in the Circular Economy Action Plan, to help European businesses and consumers to use resources in a more sustainable way.Burning of plastic in the open air, leads to environmental pollution due to the release of poisonous chemicals. The polluted air when inhaled by humans and animals affect their health and can cause respiratory problems.

Plastic pollution is the accumulation of plastic products in the environment that adversely affects wildlife, wildlife habitatand humans.[1][2] Plastics that act as pollutants are categorized into micro-, meso-, or macro debris, based on size.[3]Plastics are inexpensive and durable, and as a result levels of plastic production by humans are high.[4] Moreover, the chemical structure of most plastics renders them resistant to many natural processes of degradation and as a result they are slow to degrade.[5] Together, these two factors have led to a high prominence of plastic pollutionin the environment.
