Shedding light on plants:

When light sheds on plants, it helps them to grow. Shedding light activated the new leaves to grow. Leaf initiation was thought to have no affect by environmental cues such as light since the shoot apical meristem; the area at the top of the plant stem accountable for new growth which is protected by older leaves.

Different researchers propose that light kindles the cytokinin and auxin signalling pathways; though, it remains uncertain how these two hormone systems interrelate in this process.
