As you can see from this photograph area-51 is not actually emposing when its come to size. However, its become long running urban legend that the base contains long network of underground tunnels. This allows those workers to only conduct their various experiment and secrets but also for people to get in and out of there without being seen by anyone watching. If entirely true its makes you even more suspicious of what they are hiding. As it would an enormous task to create this huge network.
