  • The skin and the mucous membrane act as a physical barriers preventing the penetration of microbes. They are the first line of defense.
  • The mucous coating of the epithelium lining of the gut helps in trapping the  microbial pathogens entering the body.
  • Saliva in the mouth and hydrochloric acid in the gastric juice secreted by the stomach prevents microbial growth. This type of immunity is called innate immunity.
  • If the microbes manage to escape from the first line of defense then the second line of defense is activated. In this defense mechanism the phagocytes (type of WBC that move by amoeboid action) surrounds the pathogen and engulf them. Phagocytes then release the digestive enzymes to break down the engulfed pathogen before they do any harm and this process is called as phagocytosis.
