It is a Universal principle of Biology that all living organisms from the tiniest to the largest are composed of small compartments called self. Now the question that comes to our mind is "What is a cell?"
A cell may be defined as the smallest unit of structure and functions of living organisms. The smallest 'unit of structure' means, the smallest structure by the union of which the body of an organism is constructed. You may take any body organ or body as a whole, it is formed by aggregates of cells. 'Unit of functions' means, any function performed by an organ or organism is the activity of its constituent cells. Or, it may also be said that the smallest structure in the body of an organism which can perform all the functions and characteristics of living organisms, is the cell.

). All living organism are made up of cells. Cell is the fundamental structural and functional unit of human body.
). The cell has a very complex system of organelles and each organelles is concerned with a particular task.thus there is a division of labour at cellular level.
). As evolution progressed and larger nd larger organism appeared with enormous no. Of cells in the body.
). It became necessary tht the body's functions are distributed among group of cells called ''tissues''.
). Cells group together to form tissue, which in turn are grouped together into larger functional units called ''organs''.
). Organs is a group of various tissues tht performs a specific function. For eg. Stomach and intestine are organs to digest food. And lungs and tracheas are organs meant for respiration.
). Various organs grup together to form even a larger functional units called ''organ system''. Organ system is combination of a set of organs.
). The concept was formally articulated in 1839 by Schleiden & Schwann and has remained as the foundation of modern biology.
). Cells arrive from pre existing cells.
). The cell was first discovered and named by Robert Hooke in 1665....
