Stage 1 : Egg: The female butterfly lays eggs on a leaf. The eggs are small and round. About five days after the eggs are laid, a tiny worm - like creature hatches from the egg.

Stage 2 : Larvae: The tiny worm - like creature that hatches from the egg is the second stage or larvae. The larvae of the butterfly is called caterpiller. This stage is the eating and growing stage. It then sheds its old skin and gets a new skin. This process is called moulting.

Stage 3 : Pupa: After the caterpillar has stopped growing, it changes into the next from called pupa or chrysalis. It is mostly briwn or green in colour. This is the resting stag. The fully grown caterpiller secretes a protective. case around it called cocoon.

Stage 4 : Adult: Inside the cocoon, the pupa changes into adult or imago. It comes out by destroying the cocoon. Butterflies are very colourful. When the butterfly first comes out, its wings are damp and soft. Later they become strong and the butterfly flies away.
