Each side of a cube is a square with length of side = a.

In square length is equal to breadth therefore breadth = a.

Area of square = l × b ( side × side)
= a×a
= a^2

And there are six side in a cube. Therefore area of cube = 6 × a^2

= 6a^2

Hope it helps.
