The thick impure rod must be attached to the positive terminal. We want ions of copper from thr thick rod to get transferred to the thin plate. Since copper is positive ion, it will get attracted to negative electrode. That is why we keep thin plate as negative. Ehile the Cu ions will deposit on the negative electrode, the impure particles will get liberated into the solution.
