It was the violent overthrow of a parasitic elite, to be replaced by a government that represented all the population, wealthy or not. It wasn’t the first popular rebellion, of course, but it was the first time when the disenfranchised Third State, both bourgeoise and wage labourers, decided not to be taxed without having a say about the origin and use of that money. No longer the elites would have exclusive control over the wealth of the nation, without having to respond for it.
Moreover, the Revolution saw the Third State finally recognizing their common goals, and saw themselves as a political force, with rights and power that should not be less than those of the elite:
