If a species (or subspecies, or larger taxon) is extinct, there are no more of it. Every individual in that group that ever existed is dead (there is, to be sure, the classification “extinct in the wild,” for groups that still exist as individuals in zoos or in domesticated form).

An endangered species or subspecies still exists and breeds in the wild, but its numbers are feared to be too low to guarantee its long-term survival, or it is losing habitat and numbers rapidly, or both. So it’s the difference between “all of them are dead” and “some of them are still alive, but we’re not sure that they’re going to have great-grandchildren
