Answer:

Explanation:

The poem Govinda’s Disciple by Rabindranath Tagore beautifully highlights the traits of true master and his disciple who has not been able to overcome his materialistic nature.

The great teacher sat on a rock on the bank of the Ganga. His wealthy disciple, Raghunath came to him with a gift of emerald and gems studded golden bangles. After bowing to him, he offered him the costly gift.

The master teacher took one of the bangles and started twirling it round his finger. Suddenly, the costly bangle slipped from the master’s finger, and fell into the strong current of Ganga below. Raghunath, jumped after the bangle to retrieve it. The master teacher kept sitting peacefully on the rock. The bangle was lost in the water.

After a long search, Raghunath could not find the bangle and came back to the master. He asked him the exact place where the bangle had fallen. The master quite composedly took the another bangle and threw it into the exact place in the river where the former bangle had fallen.

Through the poem the poet given the message that true masters don’t value materialistic trinket.

Explanation:

Govinda’s Disciple central idea revolves around the renunciation of one’s attachment to material possessions to create space for divinity to enter our minds and make it fertile for spiritual endeavours. Human’s pursuit for wealth and the value we attach to materialistic things act as the biggest impediment on our paths for spiritual attainment. Disciples like Raghunath, whose minds are still occupied with wealth and luxuries, can never achieve clarity on their real divine purpose in life, for they are too busy amassing and showing off wealth. In this poem, the great Sikh guru Govinda by throwing his gift of bangles into the river offers a profound lesson to such inauthentic disciples who are still struggling with materialism’s hold over their minds and lives.
