Indian state West Bengal is known as West Bengal because during the rule of English in india. Bengal was the combination of present day bengal and East bengal( know known as Bangladesh) which was at that time partitioned by the British viceroy in India viceroy Lord Curzon in July 1905, by giving the reason as to make the ease of ruling in the state .
But main motive of partition was to divide the bengalis on the basis of religion which were Hindu majority West Bengal and Muslim majority East bengal. This move was taken in accordance to weaken the Indian national Congress's efforts of making a free from oppressive ruling of British.
Then during the partition of India, East bengal province came under the rule of Pakistan, West Bengal remain in India so that's why it is known as the West Bengal.
