Temperate grasslands are characterized as having grasses as the

dominant vegetation. Trees and large shrubs are absent. Temperatures vary

more from summer to winter, and the amount of rainfall is less in temperate

grasslands than in savannas. The habitat type is known as prairie in North

America, pampas in South America, veld in Southern Africa and steppe in Asia.

Tropical grasslands can also be called tropical savannas. A savanna is

another word for Plain. Tropical Grass Lands are often bordered by

deserts, seas, mountains or forests and often have some

scattered trees and shrubs. Grasses on savannas are often tall

bunch grasses to aid in surviving the extreme climate in reddish,

sandy, dusty soil that has little humus since the long drought

periods do not promote the decomposition needed for developing

fertile soil.

There are llanos in Colombia and Venezuela, Campos of the

Brazilian highlands, Pantanals of Upper Paraguay, plains in

Australia and the Deccan Plateau of India.

Note:-Read the definitions of Tropical and Temperate grass lands

and name them .
