Answer:
The poem Ten Tall Oak Trees, composed by Richard Edwards is about ten majestic oak trees which are cut over a period of time one by one or destroyed by the fury of nature until there are none. The king has the first one cut down to build war ships. The second one is taken for charcoal while the third is struck down by lightning. Another two are cut, for firewood and for making barrels, leaving five. The next one falls to the wild wind while another one is cut down by the carpenter for making floor boards. The council decides to bring down one, considering it unsafe and yet another one is cut to make way for the by-pass road, leaving just a single one. The farmer makes the final blow to the lone standing oak tree, saying that it is a nuisance. The theme of the conservation of trees is presented in a very subtle and poetic manner. The verses flow well and the language, while simple, is filled with imagery; the furnace breathes, the brewery booms, the wind screams, the highway snarls, and so on. The poet has used a variety of figures of speech to enhance the beauty of the poem like simile, personification and alliteration. A combination of history, science, merits and demerits of progress by cutting tress makes it interesting for the readers.
