after 10 years

x + 10 = 2(y + 10)

x + 10=2y + 20                               let this be equation 1

before 10 years

x − 10 = 6(y − 10)  

x − 10 = 6y − 60

x = 6y − 50                                     let this be equation 2

now, substiute eq 2 in eq. 1

6y - 50 + 10 = 2y + 20

4y = 60

y = 15

So, the age of the son is 15

x =6 × 15 - 50 = 40
