Kings in olden times had strange hobbies and interests. One such king was Raja Krishnadevarai, the ruler of Vijayanagar. He had a special liking in collecting rare and unique items. The courtiers used to take advantage of the king’s hobby and always were on a look out for old and attractive things to impress him and get rewarded in return.

One of the courtiers, who was a greedy man, one day thought of a plan. He called a very skilful painter and asked the man to paint a peacock red. The painter did it very finely and the peacock looked as if it were naturally red.

The cunning courtier then presented the bird infront of the king. He fooled the king by saying that the bird was actually a rare species found

in the forests of Central India and he has spent a fortune to get hold of the bird. He knew the king’s weakness and told him that he has specially brought this bird, as a gift for the king, so that he can add it to his rare collection.

The king had never seen and never even heard that red peacocks existed, but the painter had done his work so skillfully that even the king was convinced that the red colour naturally came to the bird. He was very happy to add the bird to his collection and he asked the courtier, the amount that had been spent to get the bird. The courtier was waiting for this opportunity and he lied that he had spent twenty-five thousand gold coins for the bird. King ordered the royal treasury to give the same amount to the courtier.

Tenali Raman, the smart and wise advisor of the king was present in the court at that time. He was not a fool to believe the trick played by the courtier. He was sure that the courtier was cheating the king. Meanwhile he also examined every detail of the bird very closely and he could get some light smell of paint. After that he was sure that the peacock’s colour was fake.

Tenali appointed his spies to look out for the best painters of the town. One of those painters admitted that he had painted the peacock red. Tenali then ordered him to paint four more birds in the same manner. The next day he took the painter and the four peacocks to the court.

Tenali presented the king with four

peacocks and told the king that they are

of a better variety. And he then told the

king that he will take 50 thousand gold

coins for the peacocks, instead of the

rate charged by the courtier.

The king watched the peacock and was

again convinced that they were real red peacocks. He still had some confusion, but he also could not find any fault in the colour.

The king then asked Tenali to take the

sum from the royal treasury.

After hearing the king’s order, Tenali stopped him and told him that neither he and nor does the courtier deserves the reward, but someone else does. He then introduced the painter, who had painted the peacocks red, to the king and informed the king that the birds were not red naturally, but it was the skill of the painter which made them look like real red peacocks. The king was shocked with the deceit. Tenali then asked him to smell the faint smell of paint that came from the peacock due to the colour to confirm that they are fake. The king was now sure about it and he rewarded the painter handsomely. The courtier was punished for his misdeeds and was also made to return the award.

Answer:

Tenali Raman and the Cat

Explanation:

Once in court, the topic of the debate was on which animal was the smartest. One minister said with conviction that the cat was the most intelligent and smart animal. Everyone agreed with his opinion. Thus the King decided to organize a competition to find out which cat was the smartest. Hence all the courtiers were asked to bring their cats the next day. The King also announced that he would give a reward for the cat that would do something that the other cats don’t.

Eventually, the competition was held. The King brought milk in a golden plate, and soon as the milk arrived, all cats except one ran to drink it. It was Tenali Rama’s cat who refused to drink the milk. Tenali Rama asked the King to reward him as his cat had done something that the other cats had not. And hence the King declared the cat of Tenali Raman as the winner.

Later the King asked Tenali Raman how he had managed to train his cat not to drink milk. Tenali Raman explained that his cat had once unintentionally drunk hot milk and burnt his tongue. Since then, the cat has always been afraid of milk. This incident gave the King a hearty laugh.
