It is the chemical reaction ,which takes place when an element or a radical displaces another element or radical ,to form a compound.

The ability of an element or atom to displace another element or atom depends upon its position in the electrochemical series .

The more positive element displaces the less positive element , in the same way the more electronegative element displaces the less electronegative element .

Ex-

Zn + CuSO4 ➡️ ZnSO4+ Cu

Here zinc is more electropositive and it displaces copper sulphate to copper to form a compound of zinc sulphate.
