Given :-

Terrell runs a 100 m long race at a speed of 9 m/s. Jason asked Terrell to time him while he ran the 100 m race.

Jason completed the 100 m race in 12 seconds.

To Find :-

Who ran faster?

Solution :-

Given that Jason completed the race in 12 seconds. and the speed of Terrell was 9 m/s.

We can solve the given problem in two different ways.

Method 1 :-

- Find the speed of Jason and compare with that of Terrell.

We have the following measurements, regarding Jason,

  • Distance travelled, d = 100 m
  • Time taken, t = 12 s

We know,

⇒ Distance = Speed × Time

⇒ 100 = Speed × 12

Speed = 8.33 m/s

Here, The speed of Jason is 8.33 m/s which is less than that of Terrell. So, Terrell ran faster.

Now, Let's see the another method,

Method 2 :-

- Find the time taken by Terrell to complete the race and compare it with the time taken by Jason i.e., 12 seconds.

We have the following measurements regarding Terrell,

  • Distance travelled, d = 100 m
  • Speed, s = 9 m/s

Now, The time taken by Terrell can be calculated as,

⇒ Distance = Speed × Time

⇒ 100 = 9 × Time

Time taken = 11.11 seconds

Here, The time taken by Terrell is less than the time taken by Jason. Hence, Again Terrell ran faster.

According to the question,

No, Jason didn't run as fast as Terrell.
