On September 11, 2001, terrorists hi-jacked four airplanes and killed 2,977 people in planes and on the ground in New York City and the Pentagon. Two weeks later the FBI connected the hijackers to Al-Qaida. The lose network of Islamic terrorists became public enemy #1 for the United States in its war on terror. But now there are several Islamic terrorists groups staging attacks around the world.

Most recently an Al-Qaida branch from Yemen said it was responsible for the attack on the satirical French magazine, Charlie Hebdo. The attack killed 11 people at the paper. Soon after another five people were killed at a Kosher Market. One of the terrorists pledged allegiance to ISIS. That’s two similar attacks that were first viewed as connected and conducted by the same group, but now appear not to be.

And in Africa, another Islamic militant group Boko Haram has wrecked havoc in the northern part of the country that’s largely ungoverned. These groups all say they are driven to their extreme and violent actions in defense of Islam. As terrorist groups change, grow and new ones are created, how can the West defend itself? It’s a complicated landscape that is stretching intelligence and military forces and leaves us asking
