A test-tube baby is the product of a successful human reproduction that results from methods beyondsexual intercourse between a man and a woman and instead utilizes medical intervention that manipulates both the egg andsperm cells for successfulfertilization. The term was originally used to refer to the babies born from the earliest applications of artificial insemination and has now been expanded to refer to children born through the use of in vitrofertilization, the practice of fertilizing an egg outside of a woman’s body. The use of the term in both media and scientific publications in the twentieth century has been accompanied by discussion as well as controversy regarding the ethics of reproduction technologies such asartificial insemination and in vitrofertilization. The evolution of these terms over time mirrors the perception of our ability to manipulate the human embryo, as seen by the general public as well as the scientific community.

In some women oviducts are blocked. These women are unable to bear babies because sperms cannot reach the egg for fertilisation. In such cases doctors collect freshly released eggs and keep them together for a few hours for IVF or in vitro fertilisation (Fertilisation outside the body). In case fertilisation occurs, the zygote is allowed to develop for about a week and then it is placed in the uterus and the baby is born like any other baby in nine months. Babies born through this technique are called test-tube babies. This term is actually misleading because babies cannot grow in test tubes.

Men should never donate Sperm.
