It is the seed coat or the outermost covering of a seed. It contains two layers testa  and tegmen.

EXPLANATION:

TESTA:

  • It is the outermost layer of the seed. It is thick and smooth in nature. It may be of different colours according to the fruit.

TEGMEN:

  • It is located after the testa. It is thin and hyaline in nature.  
  • They both protect the embryo from the outer atmosphere. A narrow elongated scar is the attachment point of seed.
