Polysiphonia or red algae, are mostly seen to exist in aquatic environment. Being haplo diplonts, they have three phases in their life cycle. The carpospores formed after fertilization, enters the meiotic phase. During the phase of meiosis, the tetrasprophyte and the tetrasporangia comes together and fuses to produce certain spores called tetraspores. These tetraspores are then converted to gametophytes that again enter the stage of fertilization.
