Question :
Solve for x :
(2x + 1)² + 4 = 5(2x + 1)
Answer :
x = 0 , 3/2
Solution :
We have ,
(2x + 1)² + 4 = 5(2x + 1) -------(1)
Putting y = 2x + 1 , eq-(1) will reduce to
y² + 4 = 5y
Now ,
=> y² - 5y + 4 = 0
=> y² - y - 4y + 4 = 0
=> y(y - 1) - 4(y - 1) = 0
=> (y - 1)(y - 4) = 0
=> y = 1 , 4
• If y = 1 , then
=> 2x + 1 = 1
=> 2x = 1 - 1
=> 2x = 0
=> x = 0/2
=> x = 0
• If y = 4 , then
=> 2x + 1 = 4
=> 2x = 4 - 1
=> 2x = 3
=> x = 3/2
Hence x = 0 , 3/2 .
