2x² + 4x + 1 = 0

By adding 1 to each sides,

2x^{2}  + 4x + 1 + 1 = 0 + 1

2x^{2}  + 4x +2= 1

Divide both the sides by 2,

 \frac{2x {}^{2} }{2}  +  \frac{4x}{2}  +  \frac{2}{2}  =  \frac{1}{2}

 {x}^{2}  + 2x + 1 =  \frac{1}{2}

Now, We get;

 {x}^{2}  + 2x + 1 =  {(x + 1)}^{2}

( {x + 1)}^{2}  =  \frac{1}{2}

Take square root in each sides,

x + 1 =  \frac{1}{ \sqrt{2} }

x =   \frac{1}{ \sqrt{2} }  - 1 =  \frac{ \sqrt{2}  - 2}{2}
