Answer 1 :-

 \longmapsto \rm5y - 1 = 3y + 4

Putting the constant and variable terms on different sides by the method of transposition,

 \rm \longmapsto 5y - 3y = 4 + 1

On simplifying,

 \rm \longmapsto 2y = 5

Transposing 2 from LHS to RHS, changing it's sign,

\longmapsto   \underline{ \boxed{\rm y =  \dfrac{5}{2}}}

Answer 2 :-

  \longmapsto\rm7 \: (x + 4) = 2x - 7

Removing the brackets by multiplying 7 with x and 4,

\rm  \longmapsto 7x + 28 = 2x - 7

Putting the constant and variable terms on different sides by the method of transposition,

  \rm\longmapsto 7x - 2x =  - 7 - 28

On simplifying,

 \longmapsto \rm 5x =  - 35

Transposing 5 from LHS to RHS, changing it's sign,

 \longmapsto \rm x =  \dfrac{ - 35}{ \:  \:  \:  \:  5}

Dividing -35 by 5,

 \longmapsto  \underline{ \boxed{\rm x =  - 7}}
