\large\underline\mathfrak\pink{Valency-}

First of all, what is valency?

=> Valency is the loss or gain of Electrons in its valence shell.

It is of two types :

★ Positive valency

★ Negative valency

How to calculate it?

=> We can find the valency of an element by using the atomic number of that element.

For example :

Valency of sodium :

Sodium is having 11 Electrons i.e its atomic number is 11.

Electronic configuration : 2, 8, 1

Here, there are less than 4 electrons in its valence shell. So, it can lose 1 Electron, it's having +1 valency.

Let we take an another example :

Valency of nitrogen :

Nitrogen is having 7 Electrons i.e its atomic number is 7.

Electronic configuration : 2,5

Here, there are more than four Electrons. So, it can gain 3 Electrons, it's having -3 valency.

♦ It is basically the combining capacity of an element or simply it is decided by the number of electrons gained or lost by the outermost valence shell(or orbit).

→HOW TO DETERMINE THE VALENCY -

  • First of all find the number of valence electron.
  • If the number is lesser than 4, the valency of the element is the same as the number of valence electrons. If the number of valence electrons are greater that 4, then you subtract the number of valence electrons from 8 to calculate the valency of the element.
