QUESTION:-

The difference in the age of two people is 20 years. If 5 years ago, the elder one of the two was 5 times as old as the younger one, then their present ages are equal to:

EXPLANATION:-

Let the age of younger one =x

Then the elder x+20

Five years ago their ages would have been x – 5 years and x + 20 years.

A.T.Q

5 (x – 5) = (x + 20 – 5)

4x = 40

x = 10

Therefore the ages are 10 years for the younger one and (10 + 20) years = 30 years for the elder one..

Let us start with step by step

Let us assume the age of elder person be x.

And according to the question the difference in there age is 20 therefore the younger will be x-20.

Also for five years ago we have to subtract 5 from there ages we will get

Elder's age x-5

And younger's age x-20-5=x-25

Also according to your question

Five years ago the age of the elder was 5 times as much of the youngers age.

On making the equation we get

x-5=5(x-25)

x-5=5x-125

125–5=5x-x

120=4x or 4x=120

On solving we get x=30

Therefore the elder's age is 30 and younger's age is 30–20=10
