The fox is a creative combination of animal, which lives in canine body but yet behaves very much like feline one.

So they are able to:

  • live solitary life instead of being dependable of packs (like wolves/dogs do)
  • think of their own survival based on individual facts and
  • are very adaptable to almost any kind of environment, climate and source of food (so they are very good survivors and manage to take care of themselves which can be related to high intelligence)
  • Also old fables are representing fox as cunning and a bit sly creature, which still outwits other animals by talking or by deception for changing their form to human one as told in Japanese kitsune - stories.

  • Foxes are usually very agile (they can get almost everywhere by digging or jumping) and they have another way out of their dens in case of danger (which can also be judged as a wise precaution for surviving).

  • IMO these are some possible reasons why foxes can be thought to be among the one of the smartest animals in nature.
