The National Policy on Education (NPE) is a policy formulated by the Government of India to promote and regulate education in India. The policy covers elementary education to higher education in both rural and urban India. The first NPE was promulgated by the Government of India by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1968, the second by Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986, and the third by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2020.

                 Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

Government of India had launched Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in the year 2000. The main aim of this is to provide better elementary education at free of cost to all the children of the age group of 6 - 14 years.

National Education policy (NEP) 1992 had a contribution towards the development of students and country . Education played a most important role in every part of life. It is the most significant tool in eliminating poverty and unemployment. The various steps taken by Government of India are as follows-

  1. Mid day meals is implemented to encourage attendance and improve their nutritional status.
  2. Government is providing laptops, cycles and books at free of cost to the children who can't afford good education.
  3. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan taken by the government to provide free of cost education to the children lie in the age group 6 -14 years.

Impact of these policies in rural and urban areas is that in 2001, The literacy rate of India was 57.6% and In year 2011 , The literacy rate of India is 74.11 now and the tertiary sector has 57.4 % share in GDP.
