Doctrine of Lapse

According to the Doctrine of Lapse designed by Lord Dalhousie, if an Indian ruler died without a male successor, the kingdom would end and hence would come under the control of the Company.

Many kingdoms were occupied by the Company by implementing this doctrine.

Lord Dalhousie was the general governor General of India from 1848 to 1856. The policy of Doctrine of Lapse with the aim of expanding the British territories by seizing state of India. In India when a king passed away to the throne. But there were instances in which the king did not have a male heir.
