Solution -

There are 18 squares altogether in the figure .

Check the attachment .

Note - I have connected the rectangles by a red line to show continuity ; don't get confused by that .

These are the squares -

  • A
  • B
  • C
  • D
  • E
  • F
  • G
  • H
  • EFGH
  • IJEF
  • FKGL
  • MNGH
  • PEOH
  • PEF × FGM ( The larger 3 sided square on the lower left corner)
  • EFK × EHN ( The larger 3 sided square on the lower right corner)
  • IFG × OHG ( The larger 3 sided square on the upper left corner)
  • IEH × HGL ( The larger 3 sided square on the upper right corner)
  • And finally the entire square itself.

This brings the total number of squares to 18, which is the required answer.

Required Answer :-

8 are completely visible where 4 is at the corners and 4 is at the middle

the 4 middle square make one more square.

Total square = 4 + 4 + 1 = 9

Now

Top right corner can be connected with middle and top left corner to middle and the bottom left can be also be connected with middle and bottom right with middle.

So,

Total square = 9 + 4 = 13 squares
