♠At the time of sunrise or sunset, the sun is near the horizon.

♠At that time, the sunlight has to travel the greatest distance through thick layers of air of the atmosphere to reach our eyes.

♠Near the horizon, most of the blue light and shorter wavelengths are scattered away by the particles.

★Therefore, the light reaching us directly from the rising sun (and setting sun) consists mainly of longer wavelength of red colour for which the sun appears red.★
