Answer :-

 \frac{2}{5} y -  \frac{5}{8} y =  \frac{5}{12}

 \mapsto \large y( \frac{16  - 25}{40}) =  \frac{5}{12}

\mapsto \large \frac{ - 9}{40} y =  \frac{5}{12}

\mapsto \large( - 9) \times y =  \frac{5 \times 40}{12}

\mapsto \large \: y =  \frac{5 \times 40}{12 \times ( - 9)}

\mapsto  \large \: y = \frac{5 \times 10}{3 \times ( - 9)}

\mapsto \large \: y =  \frac{50}{( - 27)}

Since the denominator cannot be negative ,

 \mapsto \large \: y =  \frac{( - 50)}{27}
