Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Given that,

x/5 + y/4 = 4 ⇒ 4x + 5y / 20 = 4 ⇒4x + 5y = 80-----eq ( 1 ) ( say)

x/2 - y/4 = 3 ⇒ 2x - y/4 = 3 ⇒ 2x - y = 12-------eq (2 ) (say)

Now, multiplying eq ( 2 ) by 2 ,we get

2× [ 2x - y = 12 ] ⇒ 4x - 2y = 24-------eq ( 3 ) (say )

On subtracting eq ( 1 ) - eq ( 2 ) , we get

4x + 5y - ( 4x - 2y ) = 80 - 24

4x + 5y - 4x + 2y = 56 (∵ - × + = - ; - × - = + )

7y = 56

y = 56/7 (∵transposing )

y = 8 .

On substituting " y = 8 " in ( 1 ) ,we get

4x + 5 ( 8 ) = 80

4x + 40 = 80

4x = 80 - 40 ( ∵transposing )

4x = 40

x = 40/4 (∵transposing )

x = 10 .

∴The values of x and y are 8 and 10.
