Why is diffusion insufficient to meet the oxygen requirements of multicellular organisms like humans?

In unicellular organisms cells are in direct contact with environment so diffusion will meet the necessity of the cells.But in multicellular organisms,the cells may not be in direct contact with the surrounding environment. hence diffusion will not meet all the requirements of all the cells .
