The poem ''A Photograph'' is written by Shirley Toulson. The main theme of the poem is a photograph which is captured by the uncle of the poet's mother when she and her two cousins went to the sea-shore to enjoy their holidays. The photograph had three beautiful smiling faces of the poet's mother and her two cousins - Dolly and Betty with a delicate background picture of the sea-shore.

The poet's mother looked at the photograph many years later. Looking at the photograph , she could remember her past life and became nostalgic at her bygone years. She was greatly amused at their dress and physical appearence. She laughed out and told her daughter (the poet) how her (the poet's mother's) two cousins - Dolly and betty had dressed up for the beach. Hence , her laugh indicated her joyful childhood free from any sort of anxiety and worry. At that time the poet's mother might be a teenager only and that is why she had not any kind of worry about anyone. But after being a mother , the poet's mother smile and happiness consist in the happiness of the poet.
