Answer:

Both the poetess and her mother are suffering from great pain. The mother lost her childhood, which remains just limited to the photograph pasted on the cardboard hanging on a wall.On the other hand the poetess is missing her mother's laughter, which has now become a history.Hence, both of them had to bear a loss which is really painful.

I hope it is helpful in anyway...

The poem ''A Photograph'' is written by Shirley Toulson. The main theme of the poem is a photograph which is captured by the uncle of the poet's mother when she and her two cousins went to the sea-shore to enjoy their holidays. The photograph had three beautiful smiling faces of the poet's mother and her two cousins - Dolly and Betty with a delicate background picture of the sea-shore.

The photograph generated the sense of loss in the mind of both the poet and her mother. The poet was worry to lose the smile of her mother, while the poet's mother was sorry to loss her happier childhood free from any sort of worry and anxity.

When the poet's mother looked at the photograph many years later , she became nostalgic at her bygone years. Seeing the photograph, she could remember her joyful childhood days which she had losed many years before. That is why the poet's mother was worry about it. Again , after being mother , the poet's mother smile and happiness only consist of the happiness of the poet. Therefore, the poet was worry to lose the smile of her mother.
