Parenchyma →

• Parenchyma is made up of two words - Para - beside; enchyma -,in filling.

• Parenchyma are usually loosely packed.

• They are in oval or rounded shape.

• They are thin walled and have living cells.

• Parenchyma have large intracellular spaces.

• No pits are present in them.

• They occurs in epidermis, cortex, pericycle, stem, root, fruits, flowers, mesophyll of leaves, endodermis etc.

• The are responsible for storing food.

• It also provides support to the stem of herbaceous plants.

• Parenchyma acts as packing tissue.

Types of Parenchyma→

1. Chlorenchyma

• It is found in the mesophyll of the leave.

2. Aerenchyma

• It is found in hydrophytes.

3. Prosemchyma

• It is found in pericylce.

• Parenchyma forms the bulk of plant body.
• These tissues are living and possesses the power of division.
• These tissues are round in shape or isodiametric.Isodiametric tissues are those tissues which are equally expended on all sides.They are also oval,round,polygonal or elongated in shape.
• These tissues are widely distributed in plant body such a stem roots, leaves ,flowers and fruits.Thus, these tissues are found in soft part of the plant suggests cortex of roots, ground tissues in stem and mesophyll of leaves.
• Parenchyma has loosely packed cells and have living protoplasm.

• Parenchyma serves as a packing tissue to fill the spaces between other tissues and maintain the shape and formulas of the plant due to its turgid cells.
• Due to its osmotic property,parenchyma acts as a primary support to the stem of herbaceous plants.
• The main function of parenchyma is to store and assimilate food.Thus, it serves as a food storage tissue.
• Parenchyma cells are metabolically active, there intracellular airspaces allow gaseous exchange.
• If chlorophyll is present in parenchyma, then it is called Collenchyma and perform photosynthesis.
• Transport of materials occur through cells or cell walls of parenchyma cells.
