Meristematic tissue or meristems, as they are also called are tissues that have the ability to enlarge, stretch and differentiate into other types of cells as they mature. The cells of this tissue are generally young and immature, with the power of continuous division. Intercellular space between cells is absent.

Meristematic tissue are those tissues which divides actively throughout the life of a plant. These tissue are young forever as they divide throughout their life.

1. Apical meristem - These meristem tissues are present on the top of the root and at the tip of the shoots. They help in the growth of plants of the root and shoot system.

2. Lateral meristem - These meristem tissues are present at the lateral side of stems in plants. Their main function is to increase the width or lateral surface of the plant.

3. Intercalary meristem - These meristem tissues are present on internodes or on the base of the leaves. It helps in increasing the length of the internodes.
