Carbon dioxide is used to exintguish fire. It is used because when we spray carbon dioxide on fire, it forms a layer around the fire cutting off the supply of oxygen which is one of the three requirements for burning or combustion.

Carbon dioxide extinguishes work by displacing oxygen, or taking away the oxygen element of the fire triangle. The carbon dioxide is also very cold as it comes out of the extinguisher, so it cools the fuel as well.
