Muslim believers of the Sufi or the Barelvi school of thought mark the birth anniversary of the last Prophet of Islam, Prophet Muhammad by celebrating Eid Milad-un-Nabi or Eid-e-Milad. It is also called Nabid and Mawlid in colloquial Arabic. It is celebrated by the Sufi and Barelvi sect during Rabi' al-awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar.

The moon was first sighted in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and other parts of the subcontinent on October 18th this year. The sighting of the moon sets off the Rabi ul Awwal month. According to the Gregorian calendar, October 19th was the first date of Rabi ul Awwal.
