Answer:

  • Basically, d - block elements are called transition metals.
  • They form the interstitial compound.
  • They have vaccant spaces in their lattices.
  • That's why, it's possible for the smaller atoms to accommodate inside those vacancies.
  • This makes them form interstitial compounds.
  • Smaller atoms like Hydrogen (H), Carbon (C) , Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N), etc accommodate in those vacancies.
  • These accomodation makes them rigid and more stronger.
  • The chemical properties of parent atoms don't get alter due to formation of interstitial compound.
  • But, there are changes in physical properties like density, rigidity, hardness, etc.

D-block elements form the interstitial compounds because of the reasons mentioned below.

  • The d-block elements are known as the transition metals or elements and are present in groups 3 to 12.
  • They are able to form the interstitial compounds because there are vacant spaces in their lattice, which can be filled by small atoms like hydrogen, carbon, oxygen or nitrogen.
  • As the atomic sizes are very similar to each other, the metals can replace the other metals from their lattice and form an alloy.
